How to choose an industrial brush

Wire or nylon, hand or powered - the right brush strips rust and scale fast without wrecking the surface underneath. Here's how to match it.

The right brush strips rust, scale, weld slag and paint fast - and leaves the surface underneath the way you want it. Get the wire wrong and you scratch good metal, or worse, plant rust in your stainless.

We carry a big Rocket range of hand and powered brushes across steel, stainless, brass and nylon. This walks through choosing the filament, then the shape, and getting the material match right.

Pick the filament for the surface (and match it to the metal), then the shape for the job - hand brush for spot work, cup, wheel or end brush on a grinder or drill for the bigger stuff.

1.The filament, and the material-match rule

The filament decides how hard it bites and what it's safe to use on. Here's the short version, and the one rule that saves a callback.

The rule that matters: never take a carbon-steel brush to stainless. It leaves tiny iron particles behind that rust and stain the surface days later. Use a stainless brush on stainless. And where a spark is a hazard - fuel, gas, mining - reach for brass, which won't strike one.

2.Hand or powered, and which shape

Once the filament's sorted, it's about how much surface you're covering and how you're driving it.

  • Hand brushes suit spot work - a bit of localised rust, weld prep, general clean-down.
  • Wheel brushes on a bench or angle grinder do straight-line brushing, edge deburring and pipe welds.
  • Cup brushes on an angle grinder clear large flat areas fast - scale, paint, heavy rust.
  • End brushes on a die grinder or drill get into corners, recesses and T-joints.
  • Bevel & conical brushes reach into V-welds, fillets and angled joints a flat wheel can't sit in.
  • Tube brushes clean the inside of pipe, tube and bores - with dedicated boiler and condenser ranges for heat-exchanger work.

On the wire itself, crimped is more flexible for light-to-medium work, while knotted (twist) wire is stiffer and far more aggressive for heavy scale and spatter. And like any spinning tool, a powered brush has a max safe RPM - keep the tool at or under it, wear a face shield, and expect it to throw the odd wire. On a grinder, check the thread matches too; Australian angle grinders are usually M14.
